There’s often been this prevailing notion that budget smartphone processors usually lose out on performance and power, and while this is usually the case we’ve started to see some changes over the past few years. One good example is Qualcomm, which recently announced its new Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset that’s designed to give budget-friendly Android phones a bit of a boost with overall performance.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 Mobile Platform also brings connectivity gains in addition to improved camera and gaming experiences. The chip also supports features including Snapdragon Elite Gaming features such as Variable Rate Shading and Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, and camera capabilities such as up to 200 MP photo capture and 2K video resolution. It also packs 5G and WiFi 6E compatibility, as well as Bluetooth 5.4 support for wireless connections.
One big highlight of the 6s Gen 4 is that it’s the first in the 6s-series to feature a 4nm process node, which is often reserved for higher-end chipsets. For those unfamiliar, chipsets based on 4nm processes can achieve better general performance, and in this case Qualcomm claims up to 36% improved CPU and 59% faster GPU gains, compared to previous models which were built on 6nm processes and older. For comparison, the latest flagship 8 Elite Gen 5 is designed using a 3nm process.
With all that being said, the next wave of budget-friendly Android phones is sure to get interesting, once we see more 6s Gen 4-powered devices in the coming months.
