Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation‘s highly anticipated Ghostbusters movie has finally received a key update regarding the animated project’s current development. This comes more than a year after the movie was first announced.
What’s the new Ghostbusters movie update?
According to The InSneider, Dollface writer Sam Jarvis has reportedly been tapped to pen the screenplay for Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters movie. Before Jarvis’s involvement, the outlet notes that writers Yoni Brenner (Rio 2) and Christy Hall (I Am Not Okay with This) were among other scribes who contributed to the project’s earlier drafts. In addition, it has also been revealed that Paul Kewley (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget) has signed on as the new film’s creative producer.
The untitled project will be directed by Kris Pearn, who previously worked with Netflix on the acclaimed 2020 movie The Willoughbys. The filmmaker is also best known for his work on the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise and Shaun the Sheep Movie. Further details about the movie’s plot and characters are still under wraps, but it is being described as a new entry in Sony’s Ghostbusters universe, which includes Jason Reitman’s recent Ghostbusters movies.
Besides the film, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are also working on a new Ghostbusters animated series, which has been in development since 2022. It is executive-produced by Reitman and Gil Kenan through their Ghost Corps, Inc. banner. This marks the third animated show of the franchise following ABC’s The Real Ghostbusters in the late 80s and Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997.
In a previous interview, Kenan revealed that the Netflix show may feature intersecting stories within the franchise. “That is something that I’m actively involved with Jason on a day-to-day basis right now,” he said. “We are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”
