As anticipation around the upcoming Resident Evil movie continues to grow, director Zach Cregger has come out to say that the film might not follow the storyline showcased in the games. In a recent discussion, Cregger, famous for his work on 2022’s Barbarian, opened up about his plans for the untitled reboot, sharing details regarding how he wants to structure the movie.
Zach Cregger says the Resident Evil reboot movie may deviate from the ‘lore of the games’
During a recent conversation, the actor/director noted that he is not trying to helm a movie that is faithful to the ‘lore’ of the Resident Evil games.
While speaking with SFX Magazine, Zach Cregger also acknowledged that due to the popularity of the video game franchise, his forthcoming film could face criticism from fans, regardless of its quality.
“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it. I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games,” the new Resident Evil movie director stated. (via GamesRadar+)
Cregger then explained his approach behind the reboot, noting, “I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online.”
However, Zach Cregger still expressed faith in the Resident Evil movie he is making. He added, “All I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”
While the film has yet to receive an official title, Sony Pictures has already assigned a release date of September 18, 2026, to the project.
