User Experience Research Assistantships (Undergraduate and Graduate, Remote)

Nielsen Norman Group is looking for talented research assistants who are currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students at a university or college. This is a paid, part-time, remote position.

Available Positions

We are hiring for three types of research-assistant positions:

  1. Qualitative Research Assistant
  2. Data Research Assistant
  3. Instructional-Design Assistant

General Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at a university
  • Expected graduation date: Dec 2025 or later
  • Majors: human-computer interaction, human factors, user experience, cognitive science, psychology, computer science, statistics, instructional design, or another UX-related program
  • Ability to work year round, with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week
  • Quick, self-motivated learner 
  • High productivity and responsiveness
  • Excellent English-language skills (both written and oral)
  • (Bonus but not required) Fluency in other languages and familiarity with other cultures

 

Position-Specific Responsibilities and Skills

 

1. Qualitative Research Assistants

Qualitative research assistants will conduct a variety of UX-research activities under the supervision of an NN/g staff member.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of research methodology and human-behavior principles
  • Experience with qualitative research methods such as interviews and usability testing
  • Strong analytical and communication skills

Note: We are not hiring design assistants currently.

 

2. Data Research Assistants

Data research assistants will support NN/g with various data-collection activities and will work on automating internal data-related flows and processes.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of R programming and statistical analysis
  • Strong programming skills (Python or similar languages preferred)
  • Experience with 3-tier web-app development and Google Apps scripts
  • Experience interfacing with analytics and social-media systems
  • (Bonus but not required) Familiarity with data-visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)

 

3. Instructional-Design Assistants

Instructional-design assistants will support UX-training curriculum and course development and audit educational content, providing feedback and suggestions.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Prior experience in an instructional design or support role (preferred)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to critically evaluate and improve educational content

Location:  Fully remote
